Informal classical/Italian playing in Wallasey, Merseyside

Postby martinjonas » Fri Mar 26, 2010 11:30 am

We are an informal group of mandolin and guitar players and meet every Thursday from 7:30pm to 10pm at "The Place In The Park", Central Park, Wallasey on the Wirral. We play classical, Italian, jazz/swing standards, folk and 1920s/30s popular tunes based mainly on old multi-part arrangements for mandolin orchestras.

These are informal small sessions -- there is no conductor, no formal membership and no pressure to perform to any particular standard; just a bunch of good folks getting together to read through some fun music. Typical turnout is around six people (guitar, octave mandola and four mandolins). We have a vast number of good arrangements and usually decide which one to play on the spot as the mood takes us rather than playing any particular piece to death to polish it up for public performance.

We're always on the lookout for new players. No particular standard of playing required, other than a willingness to engage with written music in standard notation. If you can't read yet or want to improve your reading, you'll find that playing with others in this way is one of the quickest ways to learn to read fluently! Guitarists and/or mandola players are particularly welcome, as we're a bit light on them at the moment.

Anybody from the Merseyside/Cheshire/Lancashire/North Wales area who is interested, feel free to come by on any Thursday. As we occasionally have to cancel because of illness or holidays, please call Joyce Richards on 0151 6384119 (or send a PM to Martin Jonas on Mandolin Cafe) beforehand to make sure we're meeting that week.
