I thought Chris Thile was absolutely staggering at Warwick Arts Centre on Friday night (10/11/06). I had assumed that he would tour with a band but he was completely solo - both voice and mandolin feeding into a single condensor mic in front of him (possibly the easiest job that sound-engineer Joe Rusby has ever had).

I saw him there with Nickel Creek back in Feb and that was an amazing gig but to see him on his own, letting his playing go wherever his fancy took it, was a revelation. Not just incredible technique but hugely entertaining too.

The only disappointing thing is that now I wish he'd recorded a couple of the tracks on his new album (particularly the closer "eleventh reel") on his own rather than with the band.
