String prices

Postby Dave Hanson » Thu Aug 29, 2013 7:43 am

Just been looking on line at string prices from the Music Room in Cleckheaton and Eagle Music near Huddersfield, the prices at The Music Room are getting seriously outrageous, £7.19 for a set of Redwing medium Irish tenor banjo and £9.59 for a set of Redwing medium mandolin strings.

At Eagle Music, £4.85 for a set of Newtone medium Irish tenor banjo and £6.99 for a set of D'Addario J74s

I know where my business will go in future.

In complete contrast, I've just had one of my mandolins re-fretted at The Music Room, absolutely first class job, and half the price of the previous one, [ not The Music Room BTW ] which was 2 years ago.

They have some skilled craftsmen working there.

If you need Newtone strings "Now", Eagle Music are about as cheap as you'll find + they will do a custom set of mandolin strings if you need something out of the ordinary. If you can plan ahead, and are prepared to wait 3 months or so, Newtone strings are actually cheaper bought from the manufacturer and you can have exactly what you want.

The other thing people might not have discovered is that you can buy J74s from Amazon at £6.57 a set and they're post free if you spend over a tenner.

I got some J74's from Strings Direct - you can get them for £6.39 a set for 5-9 sets, delivery free or £6.09 a set for 10+ - if you get less than 5 sets, I think it's £1.00 for postage. Cheers, Simon
