rattlling d string

could anyone offer any advice on this problem, the open d string plays fine, you can hit it as hard as you like with no buzz/rattle occuring but the minute you fret a note on it you get the afore mentioned rattle. any thoughts would be appreciated thanks.

Probably one of two things - either your action is too low (to state the obvious - if you have an adjustable bridge raise it a shade) or you have a slightly high fret (put a straight edge down the fingerboard and see if one looks out of place - trouble is that you'll probably find that the neck has a slight bow forwards [relief] and it won't be dead straight anyway) - over to the experts - .... and by the way welcome to the forum - Ray

If it only rattles when you fret a note, it sounds like a high fret, try looking in at WWW. FRETS.COM Frank Ford has the answers to most thing fretted.
