Compass Rose quintet - Cosmopolitango
Cosmopolitango, Compass Rose quintet, 2007
Not generally being a fan of ' fusion ' type music I was surprised and delighted by this self penned instrumental album from CRq.
Five superb musicians, with total mastery of their instruments, David Effgen on guitars, Gary Cleland bass, Andy Stees violin, Larry Howe on mandolin and last but not least a very fine percussionist Atiba Y. Jali.
There really is nothing to compare this music with, it's exactly what it says on the sleeve notes, a fusion of music from around the Mediterranean Sea with the tango rhythms of Argentina, I thought some of it had influences of the David Grisman Quintets ' Arabia ' suite, and I also thought I detected a bit of Shetland style fiddling Leonard Scolay style but maybe thats just me.
To sum up, a very fine CD.
